Sewing as a Protest – Sewing Blog | BurdaStyle.com

Take a look at this:

I thought this was an interesting article, and it is an underlying principle in everything I sew. In this mass-produced society, I get great pleasure from making clothes for myself and my daughter. I feel that as a society, in this age of connectivity, we are so disconnected from the daily essentials of life. I'm speaking of food and clothing, and the fact that we really don't know where our stuff comes from. We don't know how and under what conditions our food and clothing get to us. Now, I'm not advocating vegetarianism or anything. I just would like people to stop and think about it. I have, and it has led me down this path of discovering the joy of something handmade or homemade. With each article I make, I know and appreciate the time, energy and love that goes into each handmade item. So, in my own way, my sewing is a protest of sorts against the mechanism that is mass production.

The Dress

I would be remiss if I did not talk about the Royal Wedding Dress.   Upon first look of the dress, I found it be incredibly reminiscent of Princess Grace Kelly's wedding dress.  The dress, designed by Sarah Burton from the Alexander McQueen label, was modest and classic, but still stylish.  One can only imagine the designers and dressmakers sewing feverishly as I type to duplicate this look.  I'm no stylist, but I can only imagine that there will be a swift shift in the opposite direction when it comes to sleeves and wedding dresses, as modern brides of late have preferred strapless dresses.

My genuine thoughts on the dress:  I thought it was beautiful and classic, but I felt that it was too much like Princess Grace's dress.  I think of Princess Katherine as a stylish young woman, and I was looking for something that was modern and classic at the same time.  Is there a term for that?  Modern fabric, classic cut or Modern cut with classic fabric.  I will say, however, that I though the one detail that made the dress interesting to me was the open neckline.  That's the distinct different between her dress and Princess Grace's.

Alright, I've talked about the dress, and now I can move on to other things. . . . .

The Barn that was not meant to be for me. . . .

A lot has changed in my life, and I'm no longer sewing in the barn.  It was full of drama that I will save for a rainy day, but I am out of the barn and living in Louisiana.  Unfortunately, we have not officially moved, so all of our stuff is still in California, and I am without my sewing machine or serger (sigh).

In the interim, I've found a woman who is going to be my sewing tutor!  I can't wait.  I have my first lesson on Sunday, and she's going to let me borrow her machine.  Halloween (yes, I went there) costumes are in the works.  More details to follow. . . . .
